About Geocaching
More than one million geocache sites have been established around the globe since geocaching started 10 years ago. Geocaching involves the use of a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to seek hidden containers called “geocaches” or “caches.” It’s like a hunt for a hidden treasure, although you don’t get to keep the treasure. There are a variety of different caches and Web sites, such as http://www.geocaching.com/, that details published caches from around the world. The allure of the game, for some, is about the number of caches they find and record online. Below are a variety of caches found in Mount Airy, N.C., also known as Mayberry on the Andy Griffith Show.

Traditional Cache
This cache is the most often found within a container along with a log book. In Mount Airy, “Mayberry Reflectons” is a popular cache near the TV Land statue of Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) and Opie (Ronny Howard). The creator of this cache encourages you to reflect on your memories of watching the Andy Griffith Show, “a sweeter place, a lesson, a laugh, a father, and a son.”

Virtual Cache
This type of cache takes you take a location, but requires that you take a photo. There’s not a container at this location. A Mount Airy virtual cache would be “The Bunker Brothers” cache. It takes you to the tombstone of Change and Eng Bunker, the first famous Siamese twins, and former residents of Mount Airy.

Multi-Stage Cache
This type of cache requires the searcher to go to multiple sets of coordinates before arriving at the final destination. In Mount Airy, the “Mayberry Cache” takes you to several Mayberry sites, like the Old City Jail, Snappy Lunch, Andy Griffith’s Childhood Home, and Wally’s Service Station (where they do squad car tours of the town).

EarthCache
An EarthCache is an educational site and is great for families. These sites usually require the searcher to learn something. Near Mayberry, the “Pilot Mountain” cache is an EarthCache. Pilot Mountain is known as “Mount Pilot” on the Andy Griffith Show. This cache requires the searcher to answer four things below:
1. What type of rock protected the land feature from erosion like the surrounding area.
2. As the force of weather erosion continues, what river carried the debris to the piedmont.
3. When a rock is changed by heat or pressure, it is called ____________ Rock.
4. Using your GPSr or the information in handouts from the park, at what elevation are you viewing the peak, or from the handout, what is the elevation of the peak? __________________
